LTC5548 Replacement: GX5548 Pin-to-Pin Broadband Microwave Mixer

Time:2026-08-18 Views:68

Broadband microwave mixers are key frequency-conversion components in microwave transceivers, phased-array systems, radar, wireless backhaul, satellite communications and RF instrumentation. For existing products, replacing a mixer with a device that has different pins, RF interfaces or control requirements can introduce additional PCB redesign and system verification work.

GXSC GX5548 is developed as a direct pin-to-pin alternative to LTC5548 for broadband upconversion and downconversion applications. Its hardware compatibility allows existing LTC5548-based designs to migrate to GX5548 without changing the original PCB layout.

Unlike digitally programmable devices, LTC5548 does not require SPI, I²C or register-based software configuration. Its enable and LO frequency-doubler functions are controlled through logic-level pins. GX5548 follows the same direct hardware-oriented operating concept, so no mixer-specific software driver or register configuration is required.

GX5548 supports an RF operating bandwidth of 2 GHz to 15 GHz, an LO range of 1 GHz to 12 GHz and a differential IF bandwidth extending from DC to 6 GHz. In addition to LTC5548 replacement applications, GX5548 can also be evaluated for new broadband RF and microwave system designs.

GX5548 as a Direct LTC5548 Replacement and a Choice for New RF Designs

For products currently using LTC5548, GX5548 provides a direct pin-to-pin migration path while retaining the existing PCB and overall RF system architecture.

GX5548 is a passive dual-balanced broadband mixer supporting both frequency upconversion and downconversion. The differential IF interface extends from DC to 6 GHz, making the device particularly suitable for applications requiring low IF frequencies, including IF ranges extending to 500 MHz or below.

For applications where the IF is consistently above 500 MHz and a single-ended IF interface is preferred, GX5549 can also be considered because it integrates an IF balun.

GX5548 is not limited to replacement projects. Its wide RF, LO and IF frequency ranges also make it suitable for completely new microwave transceivers, phased-array systems, radar, broadband wireless systems, satellite communication equipment and other RF designs.

Pin-to-Pin Hardware Compatibility with LTC5548 and No Software Configuration Required

LTC5548 is an RF mixer rather than a digitally programmed signal-processing device. It does not use a serial programming interface such as SPI or I²C and does not require register configuration or a dedicated software driver.

Its primary control functions include device enable and LO frequency-doubler selection, which are implemented through logic-level control pins rather than a software communication interface.

GX5548 is designed as a pin-to-pin hardware-compatible replacement for LTC5548. Existing LTC5548 PCB designs can therefore retain their original board layout when migrating to GX5548, avoiding the need to redesign the PCB simply to accommodate a different mixer.

Because no register-based configuration or mixer-specific software driver is involved, replacement focuses primarily on board-level and RF performance verification rather than software migration.

GX5548 maintains the broadband frequency-conversion architecture required by LTC5548-based systems while extending the specified RF operating bandwidth to 15 GHz. Its differential DC–6 GHz IF interface also makes it well suited to systems requiring very low or near-DC intermediate frequencies.

Broadband Frequency Conversion Performance and Differential IF Interface

GX5548 integrates a passive dual-balanced mixer core with an internal RF balun and LO amplification chain. The RF operating bandwidth extends from 2 GHz to 15 GHz, while the integrated LO chain supports frequencies from 1 GHz to 12 GHz with a typical LO drive of only 0 dBm.

A key characteristic of GX5548 is its differential IF interface, which supports an operating bandwidth from DC to 6 GHz. This makes GX5548 especially suitable for systems requiring low-frequency IF signals or direct connection to differential IF signal chains.

The device also integrates an LO frequency multiplier that can be enabled or disabled through a CMOS-logic-compatible control interface. Enabling the frequency multiplier can reduce the required external LO frequency and simplify LO generation in appropriate system architectures.

Supply and Technical Support for Existing and New RF Designs

For mature RF products already designed around LTC5548, replacing the mixer with a device using a different pinout or RF architecture can introduce PCB redesign, additional RF tuning and a new verification cycle.

GX5548 provides a direct pin-to-pin hardware-compatible alternative while allowing the existing LTC5548 board architecture to remain unchanged. Since the mixer does not depend on a serial programming interface or register configuration, there is no separate mixer software platform that must be migrated.

For new RF and microwave products, GX5548 can also be evaluated as a broadband upconversion and downconversion mixer with a differential DC–6 GHz IF interface.

GXSC can provide technical support for compatibility evaluation, sample testing, RF performance verification and new design selection for both LTC5548 replacement projects and new RF system development.
